Why OTC medications are not a good solution

There are many "over the counter" anti-acne preparations on the market. They may seem to work for a while, but then may make the situation worse. They tend to significantly dry out skin, or cause irritation when first used, and can even cause flare-ups.

Of greater concern most use Benzoyl Peroxide (BPO), a powerful chemical which decomposes into benzene which is a proven carcinogen. While the US FDA currently approves use under 2 PPM (parts per million) manufacturers are using concentrations up to 12 times the allowed PPM. BPO is banned in Europe due to toxicity.

The US FDA recommends benzene not be used in the manufacturing of any portion of a drug product due to its known carcinogenic properties. BPO is banned in Europe.

More seriously, tests have found that time and temperature causes acne preparations with BPO to produce benzene many times greater than at the time of manufacture and many times above any suggested “safe” limit. Benzene is absorbed through skin. This is a major health concern and the subject of many currently active lawsuits filed against acne preparation providers.  There is a formal recommendation to the US FDA for market withdrawal of BPO, filed by medical research organizations.

There are also common side effects such as rashes, irritation, skin dryness, burning/stinging, initial outbreaks and dry, flaky skin.

NO side effects have been reported from Australiana Botanicals products. In the unlikely event an individual has a specific allergy to some natural plant any effect would probably be temporary redness. Australiana uses no ingredients that are considered harmful or a health risk. All ingredients are botanical and work though natural antibacterial, cleansing and nourishing properties. The United States Department of Health and Human Services also identifies benzene as cancer-causing, linking it to acute lymphocytic leukemia, chronic lymphocyticleukemia, multiple myeloma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Benzene can enter the human body through the eyes, skin, respiratory system, blood, central nervous system and bone marrow, according to the  National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and Centers for Disease Control. Benzene then causes cells to not work properly and interferes with red blood cell production while also changing blood levels and interfering with white blood cell levels, one lawsuit says.

According to Dermatology Times, a leading professional medical publication:

High levels of the cancer-causing chemical benzene were found in various benzoyl peroxide (BPO) acne products from major brands, including Proactiv, Clinique, Clearasil, and more.¹

Valisure LLC, a US independent testing laboratory, filed a petition with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently, requesting a recall of treatments affected by elevated levels of the carcinogen in order to allow regulators to investigate.²  Valisure tested 66 BPO products, including creams, lotions, gels, and washes that are available over the counter from main retailers or in prescription form. Currently, FDA guidelines allow up to 2 parts per million of benzene, and Valisure found acne products that contain up to 12 times the allowed amount.

Why traditional medical intervention protocols

may not be an acceptable solution

Common medical protocols can include topical and oral anti-biotics. Taking anti-biotics for a period longer than 6-8 weeks can harm the microbiome and lead to antimicrobial resistance. This means the bacteria on your face can become resistant to the antibiotics and make your acne worse, cause additional infections and make treatment more difficult.

Alternate commonly used protocols can include a cocktail of oral contraceptive pills that combine hormones progestin and estrogen. Other than objections for your own personal reasons, common side effects of combined oral contraceptives are weight gain, breast tenderness and nausea. Additional other drugs commonly used are also associated with increased risk of cardiovascular problems, breast cancer and cervical cancer.

These drugs block the effect of androgen hormones on the oil-producing glands. Possible side effects include breast tenderness and painful periods, inflammatory bowel disease, depression and birth defects. Some require regular doctor visits to monitor for side effects.

These drugs are used in combination with Benzoyl Peroxide, which, as we know, degrades to benzene which is a proven cancer causing chemical.
